Notions on Tarantism: A Compilation of Informal Anthropological Research
Thursday 30th January, 6pm
Independent curator Sara Dowling will present a talk on her new publication researching Tarantism.
This curated compilation explores Tarantism, a cultural phenomenon which affected many generations of women across Southern Italy. Tarantism is a complex conditioned phenomena with cultural, social, religious and psychological roots and elements, known for strong links to impulsive dance and music, and believed to have originated from the bite of the Tarantula. The publication includes contributions from women collaborators local to the area of Galatina and surrounding Lecce regions. Together, each contributor has responded in their own creative way to the phenomenon, one which is now instrumental to the cultural makeup of the town.
Sara Dowling was the first Irish woman participant on the DOMUS Artist Residency Programme. Her residency experience and extended research was enabled through the generous receipt of the Culture Moves Mobility Award, from the Goethe Institut and Culture Ireland. Printing was produced by GBM Limerick, supported by the Limerick Arts Office Individual Bursary Award. Any profit made by purchases of the book will directly support further research in this area, relating to the curated visibility of women in arts history and social culture.
